📰 GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK
Abbotsford’s Snowball Classic basketball tournament releases 2026 schedule
The 64th annual Snowball Classic — Abbotsford’s biggest high school basketball tourney — has officially released its 2026 schedule. The action runs January 14–17 at the good ol’ Pit Gym at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Whether you’re into buzzer-beaters or just love the energy of packed gym nights, this is one week to mark in your calendar. Last year’s final was a blast — the Kelowna Owls shocked MEI 89-80 to take home the title — and this year’s lineup looks just as tasty. With a history stretching back to 1961 and countless memorable moments, the Snowball Classic continues to be a local winter highlight.
B.C. govt. awards contract for Hwy. 11 interchange replacement in Abbotsford
The B.C. government just awarded a big design-build contract (about $242 million) to rebuild the Highway 11 (Sumas Way) interchange in Abbotsford, and crews are slated to start work this January — so you’ll likely notice them out there soon. Once it’s done, the whole interchange should help ease congestion on that stretch of Highway 1/11, with wider lanes, new HOV/EV lanes, bike paths, and even truck parking to make life a bit smoother for commuters, cyclists, and truckers alike. This project is part of the bigger Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program, a multi-phase effort to improve travel through the valley as traffic keeps growing. So expect some construction, but also better traffic flow down the road!
Abbotsford School District releases season two of award-winning video series
The Abbotsford School District just dropped season two of its popular Journey to 2036 video series online — and it’s free for everyone to watch. This long-term project follows a group of local students as they grow and learn, and the first season even snagged a national communications award for its creativity and impact. In this latest batch of videos, the spotlight is on a Grade 2 class doing everything from tackling number problems and discovering the joy of reading, to talking about friendship, kindness, and what they dream of becoming (think engineers, doctors, firefighters, and even digital creators!). New superintendent Nathan Ngieng (taking over after former superintendent Sean Nosek stepped down) gets in on the action by chatting with the kids about their school experiences and future goals. There are seven short episodes planned between now and June, and the first couple are already up if you want a quick, heartwarming look into what our littlest learners are thinking.

🐾 BEST BUDDY OF THE WEEK

COURTESY OF THE BC SPCA
Blue Bones the beautiful boy is ready to meet you! This loving pup came into our care after being born of an accidental litter and needed some help to find his forever family. Blue was born to a litter of 13! This means his first guardian had their hands full which resulted in Blue and his siblings receiving very little training and socializing. Blue is in need of his regular puppy training but also needs his guardian to be prepared for trust and confidence building. This group has very little experience in the busy outside world so working on socializing will make a huge difference on how they can navigate life. Everything Blue sees is brand new, which can be both exciting and fear inducing. Taking slow steps towards building his world will help transform him into a well-rounded four legged companion.
